Other than her direct mentor, others were all willing to take her under their wing, which allowed her to observe various major surgeries early on—perhaps it was just her calling to be in this profession; when she first faced the bloody scene at the operating table, she felt not the slightest discomfort.
She gradually began to assist and even participate in surgeries, and she took part in numerous mid-sized surgeries without difficulty. There were also plenty of opportunities to attend conferences, both domestic and international, and during this time, she spent a year studying abroad.
Due to her mentor’s influence, she experienced different departments in the hospital during her “internship” where she came into contact with a wide range of medical conditions. Once her internship ended, she only needed to wait to accumulate seniority; when the time came, she would easily advance to the next position.
Naturally, the school would not forsake the opportunity for her to continue further studies; as long as there were no issues, she would eventually become a leading figure in the medical field, just like her mentor.
——Some have said that she was simply born for medicine; any doubt about her capabilities would be a waste of talent, especially if she were to specialize in a single field. As time went by, her abilities became increasingly prominent, and hospitals across the country extended their olive branches, including several top-tier private hospitals, each offering increasingly generous compensation.
Her mentor’s greatest concern was that she might encounter problems once she officially took on patients at the hospital, as handling patients directly is far different from providing assistance from the sidelines. There could be any number of bizarre patients and their families to deal with, and if she couldn’t control herself, the likelihood of something going wrong would be nearly one hundred percent.
But what could be done? All they could do was protect her with all their might until she reached a position of enough power to speak out assertively, at which point others would have to grudgingly accept it. Although, as a medical professional, this kind of thinking isn’t quite right.
Just haven’t waited for… The current context is different, human rights and such…
At least until now, no one has truly angered Xiao Cao; once she puts on a gloomy face, it’s often the patients and their families who first step forward, filled with trepidation, to apologize and make amends. No one is foolish enough to offend a formidable physician, although that may also be due to the fact that they are all ordinary people.
So, it can be said that she has the heart of a doctor, indeed, but when it comes to the highest state of a doctor’s heart, she was afraid, she was still far from it, or perhaps she will never attain that level in her lifetime
“Mother, why not let Xuan’er try?’ Wenren Taibo said, his tone carrying a hint of urgency.
Wenren Taibo inexplicably felt a sense of trust in Xiaocao regarding this matter.
Of course, he did not believe that Xiao Cao was genuinely trying to curry favor, after all, she always maintained a sense of restraint with them; it made no sense for her to ingratiate herself with a grandmother she had just met and spoken to only a few times. It was probably the innate compassion of a doctor surfacing.
Suddenly, Wenren Taibo really wanted to meet his daughter’s adoptive father. It seemed that his daughter’s kind-hearted nature was influenced by him. During the carriage ride back, even though his daughter had only said a few words, it was evident that she spoke of him as a person worthy of respect.
The Old Madam Wenren glanced at her son, her thoughts difficult to decipher, but she ambiguously responded.
Xiaocao stepped forward, took off her shoes, climbed onto the couch, moved around behind the Old Madam Wenren, removed the few hair ornaments from her head, loosened her hair that had been coiled up, pressed her fingers, and began to massage the Old Madam, saying, “Grandmother, if I apply too much pressure and it hurts a bit, just let me know.”
Old Madam Wenren did not say a word, but Xiaocao didn’t mind. In fact, having done this many times, Xiaocao was quite familiar with it and understood the need for a gradual approach. There was basically no chance of causing discomfort.
While she was working, Xiao Cao spoke gently and softly to Old Madam Wenren, and even if she only received the occasional reply, those nearby could clearly feel that as time passed, Old Madam Wenren’s tone became softer, and her expression relaxed.
Xiao Cao managed to draw out quite a bit of conversation about Old Madam Wenren’s deceased grandfather, and soon Old Madam Wenren spoke more freely, revealing even a slight smile when discussing certain topics. This was something quite astonishing to the onlookers, as they knew that even after serving her for twenty years, they rarely heard her speak this much. In that moment, they couldn’t help but admire Xia Cao.
Gradually, Xiao Cao began to talk less, her movements lighter, until at some point, she completely stopped.
With a stretch of her hand, she supported the leaning figure of the elderly Old Madam Wenren, and only then did the others realize that the Old Madam had fallen asleep. It was difficult for Old Madam Wenren to fall asleep; she couldn’t take calming medicine and had to rely on soothing incense. It was a challenge to fall asleep, and even more so to stay asleep. After many years, seeing her peacefully asleep like this was a rare sight.
Everyone was filled with excitement but restrained themselves from speaking, fearing that they might wake Old Madam Wenren. Those who came forward to help, like Aunt Xiang, were very gentle and dared not use any force. Xiao Cao smiled and said, “It’s okay, Grandmother is sleeping soundly now; she won’t wake up.”
Xiang Mama couldn’t help but smile, reciting “Amitabha” twice, and thanked Xiao Cao repeatedly.
There are some among them who know how to massage and often give the Old Madam a rub, but it definitely doesn’t have the same effect.
“Mother, you’re being too polite. Whether as a granddaughter or otherwise, I naturally hope for my grandmother’s well-being. — Let’s help grandmother to her room; I’ll massage her legs and feet to make her sleep more comfortably tonight.”
Wenren Taibo and Han Shi also stepped forward to help. Once the Old Madam Wenren lay down, removed her outer clothing, and was left in her inner garments, Xiao Cao gently squeezed her limb joints, which showed signs of deformation to some extent; she had severe rheumatism.
While feeling her pulse, Xiao Cao asked Xiang Mama about her condition.
Looking at Old Madam Wenren, Xiang Mama knew that this Fourth Young Lady must have studied medicine and probably was quite good at it.
The old madam was sleeping so soundly, which meant she had immense trust in Xiao Cao, allowing her to share everything without holding back.
Xiao Cao understood everything clearly, and combined with her own diagnosis, she had a general understanding of her grandmother’s condition.
From her previous life’s knowledge, she suspected cerebral vascular sclerosis, myocardial ischemia, rheumatism, high blood pressure, and kidney issues, along with some emotional distress. Additionally, the long-term medication had caused stomach problems; she truly had a multitude of ailments.
Xiao Cao began to massage her grandmother’s hands and feet, then inquired about the medicines that the elderly Old Madam Wenren had been using. Unable to articulate it to her, her mother simply showed her the prescription.
Xiao Cao remained calm, “Since grandmother cannot take the medicine, let’s pause it for now.”
As for whether to proceed with further treatment, that would of course require her grandmother’s opinion, and they would discuss it tomorrow.
After that, while massaging, she reminded Xiang Mam about some food restrictions.
In the beginning, Xiang Mama was listening attentively, but somewhere towards the end, “…this, the Imperial Physician of the Tai Hospital has said it cannot be eaten.”
Xiao Cao smiled and wasn’t angry, “What can’t be eaten is for those who can eat normally. Grandmother eats very little, and apart from things that absolutely must not be touched, as long as she can eat something else, just let her eat a bit. Some things, if consumed in excess, will indeed cause problems, but if one is already lacking and doesn’t supplement with anything, it will only lead to greater weakness.”
Xiang Mama nodded busily, but what she really thought was uncertain.
