As a young child, Wenren Xuan was full of life and energy, earning her the nickname ‘Xiao Cao’ from her adoptive father, which meant ‘little grass’.
Wen Renxuan’s adoptive father was a brilliant individual with a talent for healing, earning him a reputation as a miracle doctor.
For eight years, he took on the responsibility of caring for her, despite the added burden, as they journeyed across the nation, practiced medicine, offered consultations, and saved numerous lives. Despite his physical limitations, he showed great kindness to Xiao Cao, acknowledging her devoted care for him since she was barely more than a toddler at just three years old.
From infancy, Xiao Cao was exposed to medical knowledge through her foster father’s teachings. While still a baby, she absorbed information from his lectures, and by the time she could walk, she had already begun her formal medical education.
Despite her background in Western medicine, she now found herself embarking on a new journey in a completely different medical system. Starting from scratch in this unfamiliar field, her passion and enthusiasm were driving her forward with renewed vigor.
When she was just eight years old, her foster father arranged for her to marry eleven-year-old Xue Tingyu, a frail child with no family, but surrounded by servants. Despite his youth, this unusual boy had been tutored by a wise elderly man and was carefully managed by a Mama who possessed unwavering stability. These circumstances hinted that he was no ordinary young boy.
Xiao Cao couldn’t fathom the reason behind his early marriage, particularly given her own humble beginnings. Out of caution, she chose not to pry into his past or ask questions, fearing that such inquiries would only lead to unwanted complications and distress for herself.
Her husband bestowed upon her the name ‘萱’ (Xuān), which means daylily or forget-me-not.
Her foster father, before leaving, left behind a massive medical book, equivalent in weight to six or seven large stones, which represented his 30-year accumulation of knowledge.
During the seven years they lived together, Xue Tingyu was extremely kind to her. Besides taking care of her with meticulous attention, he also studied alongside her, never interfering with her research on medicine, even when she ventured into the “forbidden zone” of Western medicine.
By the time she was 15, they were preparing for a formal marriage. Xiao Cao didn’t resist; while there might not have been romantic love between them, the bonds formed through their daily interactions and habits made her realize that she would never have another husband.
To Xiao Cao, Xiao Tingyu’s importance was on par with that of her foster father.
Although he was already 18 years old and still had a youthful air about him, he was gradually transitioning into a young adult. He grew more handsome and refined, with a gentle and considerate disposition, and in Xiao Cao’s eyes, there was no one more perfect than him.
However, on the eve of their formal marriage, Xue Tingyu suddenly died without warning. Xiao Cao was only able to confirm his death, but couldn’t investigate the cause before being forced out of the house, sent away to a great distance. When she returned, the place was empty and silent, with no sign of him anywhere. She didn’t even know where his tombstone was.
Xiao Cao regretted her decision not to ask about his affairs beforehand, leaving her with nothing but uncertainty and a deep sense of loss.
Forcing herself to calm down, Xiao Cao became determined to uncover the truth behind his death – despite his poor health, he had been meticulously cared for and could have lived a normal life span. There was no apparent internal or external cause for him to die suddenly.
Based on this meager speculation, she stepped into the midst of luxury and opulence, standing at the foot of the emperor’s throne, with the imperial city laid out before her.
Even if the chances seemed incredibly slim, she remained fixated on this one goal, making it her sole focus.
—The fact that she was registered as a resident of the imperial city could be seen as fortunate. Her medical expertise was her only means of gaining entry into high society’s circles. However, she lacked the necessary background and wasn’t getting any younger. Therefore, she had to first establish a reputation for herself, making gradual progress step by step.
—At this moment, Xiao Cao shed the childishness that had been brought about by physical immaturity and Xue Tingyu’s indulgence.
Nearly three years later, things had developed in a completely different direction…
